Manual MacChess 1.0 EN Rotterdam December 1994 MacChess 1.0 NL is Freeware (postcardware) and is circulated with te next items: MacChess 1.0 NL program; 380,295 bytes. MacChess Openings Book; MacChess 1.0 NL document 114,067 bytes. txt MacChess Manual NL; Simple Text document 7,248 bytes. txt MacChess History NL; Simple Text document 1,584 bytes. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS MacChess works only on a Macintosh with at last a 68020 processor and system 7. MacChess has been tested on a Classic II and on the Centris 610. Please let me know if there are any problems when other types of Macintosh are used. MEMORY AND TRANSPOSITION TABLES The memory of MacChess has been put on 2000 K, but it can be changed with the infobox of the Finder to 1000 K or more, depending on your computer's memory. The number of kilobytes used influences the 'Transposition Table'. For example, if the memory used is 6000 K or 10000 K for transposition tabels of 4000 or 8000 K, more search depth in the end game will be achieved. ============================================================================= WINDOWS If MacChess is started up for the first time, the position of the chess board is in the upper left corner of the screen. There are five more windows: Ñ ML: Main Line; this is the place for the main line. Ñ Info: The following information is shown during the search: - score: the score from the point of view of MacChess: if the score is -29992, then MacChess can be checkmated in 8 plies. - depth: The first figure shows the search depth of MacChess and the second figure shows the highest search depth. - number mov: the number of moves that is examined; the second figure shows the number of moves minus the moves leading to a checkmate. - move: This show the move that is examined; the figure shows the number of moves that is left. - positions: The number of evaluated positions which are examined. - pos./sec.: The number of positions per second. - phase of the game: This shows the position of the game MacChess thinks it is; Opening game, Middle game or End game. For example: the notation KR-K stands for an end game of King + Rook against King. Ñ Time: In this window the clocks of white (left) and black (right) can be found. The upper clocks show the time that has been used, the other clocks show the time per move. Below the line first the time left per move is shown, then the number of moves that is left and finally the total time that is left. Ñ Moves: The notation of the moves which are played. Ñ Openings Book: When starting up the program, first the version number and the size of the openings book appear; during the game the name of the openings are shown. ============================================================================= MENUS Ñ Apple menu: - About MacChess: Here the information about the version number of MacChess is shown, as well as the version number and size of the openings book, the size of the transposition table and the name of the Author. - Freeware: Here the information about the distribution of MacChess is shown. MacChess 1.0 may be used freely, however it is copyrighted and is not in the public domain. It may not be distributed for profit or included in any CD-ROM collection of software without permission. Individuals, user groups and online services are encouraged to distribute MacChess 1.0 provided it is not modfied in any way. Ñ File: - New Game: Start a new game. - Open Game: Open a game in MacChess format. - Save Game: Save a game in MacChess format. - Save Text: Save a game in ASCII format. - Save Board: Save the board in PICT format. - Page Setup: Printer - Print Text: Print the game. - Print Board: Print the board. - Quit: End the MacChess program. Ñ Players: - Player V MacChess: Player (white) against MacChess (black). - MacChess V Player: MacChess (white) against Player (black). - Player V Player: Can also be used to reach a position through an opening you choose yourself. - MacChess V MacChess: MacChess plays automatically against itself. Ñ Level: - Set Level: You can select your own time level. The last three options Choice, Ply and Mate are linked to the options given on the right hand side. Choice: connected to Time1 and Time2. Time2 is for after the time check. Ply: connected to the popup menu Max Ply. Mate: connected to the popup menu Mate In. - Reset Time: The clock goes back to zero. Ñ Options: - Game Info: You can fill in the names of the players and two lines of comment. This information is also saved and will be printed. - Game Pause: The clocks will be stopped and we wait. - Advice Move: This is the second move of the Main Line. - Force Move: The move will be played straight away. - Takeback Move: One move of white and one move of black will be taken back. - Takeback Ply: Only the last move will be taken back. - Game Monitor: You can scroll through the game. - Setup Board: You can set up any legitimate board position. Clicking on a piece makes the square empty, clicking on an empty square puts the piece on it. Items from up to down: Popup menu for pieces: choose your pieces. Popup menu for colours: choose which colour starts. Button Copy Board: The game board will be copied to the setup board. Button New Board: The beginning position of the game appears. Button Clear Board: This gives you an empty board. Button Turn Board: The Setup board will be turned 180 degrees. Button Cancel: Nothing happens. Button Ok: If the position is legitimate you can play.
